Mickey Mouse Bento

Cute little Koa asked for a bento, not a sandwich bento. He wanted me to look at the Susan Yuen's bento book and make something from there. I decided to take just one part of her bento to use, her wrapped cylinder musubi. I used a Mickey Mouse punch on it. Here are the results. I hadn't made a musubi like these before, so I was happy to try a new idea. I even included little nori faces. The second layer contains mini corn muffins I baked in the morning, fresh cut pineapple, and Portuguese sausage.

I love Susan's bento books. I also like that she lives here in Hawaii, because she has the same style of cooking that my family loves. Also, I can run out and things that she mentions quite easily.

I was quite nervous to meet her, but was happy to actually meet her in person. I was a bit goo-goo ga-go over meeting her in person. She is quite gorgeous, don't you think?

Waikiki Aquarium

We went to the Waikiki Aquarium this weekend. I was inspired to make fish shaped tuna sandwiches with some "seaweed" (cucumbers) for the fish to eat. Also, some "rocks" (olives) for the fish to hide in.

Label Your Medicine

My children have allergies and asthma. So I need to keep medicine on hand in the healthroom at school. To avoid any possible mix ups, I have included a picture of them on the ziploc bag that contains their medicine. These pictures were printed on large sticky labels. A healthroom aid could easily adminster the incorrect medication. Which I hope never happens. I hope this eliminates any potential problems.

Child's Scripture Bag

I am attempting to sew more. I am terrible at sewing, but I am determined to improve my sewing capabilities. So even though this bag so far from perfect, this is my current level. But I will apply myself.

This bag is made from a placemat.

It contains two zippered pockets that are very crooked. These crooked pockets will hold Jade's pens and crayons.

When the placemat is folded, it creates two pockets. One of those will hold her scripture. The other pocket she can put some paper for her drawings.

On the outside of the bag, I added a pocket, and sewed some felt flowers.

Chemistry: The Periodic Table

I came across a blog where Lisa is teaching her 5 and 7 year old girls The Periodic Table. Seeing that her children were able to grasp the concept, I was excited to try it with my children. The very next day I picked up a copy of this book at Borders.

The book comes with a periodic table, so I made several copies of the chart to use in our matching activities. I then laminated the chart. I cut out the individual elements, and laminated those, then cut them out. The children match the elements and have a lot of fun doing that. They ask questions about the elements. I look it up in the book and tell them about that element.

Here are the matches that they have so far.

Lisa emailed me some questions that she used with her children. Lisa created a scavenger hunt. I decided to use the questions as a Montessori style lesson. This isn't a true Montessori type work, I just use some of their concepts. I made these flash cards self correcting. First I place the questions down.

The the child finds the matching element and places it below the question. If I see them place a card incorrectly, I do not correct them. They will correct themselves in the next step .

Then the child flips over the cards to see if the markings match. Each set of matches have their own matching stamps. If it matches, it is correct. If it doesn't match, then the child reviews their work and finds the correct match

I haven't shown them this part. I will later. This will help them understand the different groups that the periodic table is broken down into.

If you flip it over, the name of that group is on it. This exercise will hopefully teach them the names of the groups and the location of the groups.

I am so excited about this project. I also started a little basket of things that contain the elements. Such as foil (aluminum) , silicon moisture packets (silicon), zinc cream (zinc), pencil (carbon). As we learn more, we will add items to our basket.

"Celebrate" Events Calendar

Whenever we have a special day coming up, our family likes to celebrate the entire week leading up to that day.

I put together this calendar to build the anticipation. The special event on the calendar is the first day of school. Somedays we have just one activity, other days we have a few activites.

I saw this online at Chocolate on my Cranium, and just had to try it. My daughter has been asking to celebrate her birthday early. So here it is, a birthday cake and celebration for her.

They were so simple to make because it is made from Oreos and can frosting.

But it was a little hard to bite into. And the children abondon their cakes. But it was fun to make. Maybe next time I will try them with cakesters.

Minced Chicken with Lettuce

My mother-in-law served this the other day when I was visiting and I just loved it. She gave me the recipe, but I don't know where she got it from. I made it tonight. It wasn't difficult to make. Matt and I just loved it!

Ingredients:
8 medium sized shiitake mushrooms
1 teaspoon cornstarch
4 teaspoons chicken broth
1 teaspoon shoyu
1/2 teaspoon salt
dash of pepper
1 1/2 punds chicken breast, skinned, boned, and minced (or ground chicken)
5 T salad oil
Cooking sauce (see recipe below)
1 teaspon minced fresh ginger
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 green onions (white part only), minced
1 can (about 8 oz.) bamboo shoots, minced
Hoisin sauce
about 30 iceberg lettuce leaves, washed, drained and chilled

Cooking Sauce:
In a bowl, combine 1 teaspoon shoyu, 1 teaspoon dry sherry, 2 Tablespoons oyster sauce, 2 Tablespoons water, 1 teaspoon sesame oil, 1/2 teaspoon sugar and 2 teaspoons cornstarch. Set aside.

Preparing Meat Mixture:
1. Cover mushroom with warm water, let stand for 30 minutes, then drain. Cut off and discard stems; squeeze mushroom dry, mince, and set aside.

2. In a bowl, combine cornstarch, chicken broth, shoyu, salt and pepper. Add chicken and stir to coat, then stir in 1 teaspoon of the oil and let stand for 15 minutes to marinate.

3. Prepare cooking sauce and set aside.

4. Heat a wok or wide frying pan over high heat. When pan is hot, add 3 T of the oil. When oil is hot, add chicken and stir-fry until chicken is opaque (about 3 minutes). Set aside.

5. Add the remaining oil to the pan. When oil begins to heat, add ginger, garlic, and onion and stir once.

6. Add mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and water chestnuts and stir fry for 2 minutes.

7. Return chicken to pan.

8. Stir cooking sauce, add to pan, and cook stirring until sauce bubbles and thickens.

9. To eat, spread a little hoisin sauce on a lettuce leaf, spoon in some chicken, then wrap up in lettuce.

Makes 4-6 servings.

Matryoshka Doll and Continents

I was glad to finish off these two projects today.

I found a matryoshka doll pattern online and wanted to try it out because I have a small collection of nesting dolls. I am not good at embroidery, but hope to improve over time. Here is how it turned out.

I also made the continents out of felt for Koa to supplement his Montessori work.

I am thinking about doing the same thing with the Hawaiian Islands.

Beef Oxtail Soup

I have always thought oxtail soup sounded so gross. Not until after I married Matt did I try oxtail soup and now I just love it. Matt, who enjoys cooking, made this bowl of oxtail soup. I haven't bothered to learn it from him because it takes 2 days to cook. It is more work than I would like to do. So whenever oxtail is on the menu, I give the kitchen to Matt who is more than willing to cook oxtail. Unfortunately, he has no recipe for this. Matt usually cooks without recipes. If we have Chinese parsley, we use it as garnish. Oh, and by the way, one bowl of oxtail soup at a restaurant starts at $11.95. Pictured here is probably 4 servings.

Because it makes so much, and our family consists of my husband and I and two young children, we are usually have leftovers. It freezes well. Sometimes we freezer it in one serving sizes for my father for a quick meal.

As soon as Matt gets home, I will have him write dwon the recipe for me and post it.

Simple Whole Wheat Bread

Simple Whole Wheat Bread

I use a little more wheat then white and a little more honey. I like that the bread has a sweet honey flavor.

INGREDIENTS:
3 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45degrees C)
2 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast
1/3 cup honey
5 cups bread flour
3 tablespoons butter, melted
1/3 cup honey
1 tablespoon salt
3 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
2 tablespoons butter, melted

DIRECTIONS:

1.In a large bowl, mix warm water, yeast, and 1/3 cup honey. Add 5 cups white bread flour, and stir to combine. Let set for 30 minutes, or until big and bubbly.

2.Mix in 3 tablespoons melted butter, 1/3 cup honey, and salt. Stir in 2 cups whole wheat flour. Flour a flat surface and knead with whole wheat flour until not real sticky - just pulling away from the counter, but still sticky to touch. This may take an additional 2 to 4 cups of whole wheat flour. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to coat the surface of the dough. Cover with a dishtowel. Let rise in a warm place until doubled.

3.Punch down, and divide into 3 loaves. Place in greased 9 x 5 inch loaf pans, and allow to rise until dough has topped the pans by one inch.4.Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 25 to 30 minutes; do not overbake. Lightly brush the tops of loaves with 2 tablespoons melted butter or margarine when done to prevent crust from getting hard. Cool completely

Bread Sticks

BREAD STICKS
1 T yeast
1 1/2 c warm water
2 T sugar
3 c flour
1/2 tsp salt

Disolve yeast in warm water. Add sugar and salt. Knead in flour for about 3 minutes. May add more flour so dough isn't sticky but still very soft. Let rest 10 minutes.

Roll out onto greased surface. Melt 3/4 cube butter on jelly roll pan. Add garlic if you would like.

Cut dough into bread sticks. I like to pick them up, fold in half and twist the two ends together. Roll sticks in butter and lay on pan.

You can sprinkle with parmesan cheese if you like. Raise 1o more minutes.

Bake in 375 degree oven for about 15-20 minute until golden brown.

It is good to add a few sprinkles of shredded mozarella cheese a few minutes before removing from oven.
These bread sticks are yummy, easy and fairly quick. We also use this dough for pizza crust.

Easter Bunny for the Toy Society

I made this little Easter bunny for the Toy Society. My second toy for the Toy Society. This bunny is from Betz White.

I included the information for the finder about what the Toy Society is.

I was going to visit someone at the Queen's hospital today and thought it would make for a good place to drop my bunny. In the main lobby, there is a beautiful Koa wood bench shaped like a piano. It is absolutely beautiful. I left the little bunny on the bench there at 12:20 pm. I went to pick up something at the snack shop.

After picking up a drink, I passed by the bench to take the elevators up to visit with a family member. The bunny was still there.

But on my way home, a half an hour later, the bunny was gone. I hope it makes someone happy. Especially since there are a lot of sick people there. People who visit family or friends there could also be needing a pick me up. Either way, I hope the finder is happy this Easter time.

I am teaching myself how to make bentos. I read somewhere that you can use edible markers for the face. But when I drew on the face, it looked horrible. I need to get some bento goods.
I saw online that you can make octo dogs, so this is my first attempt. I used a hotdog. I need to try a Japanese sausage, like Arabiki. I read it turns out much better. Ths one is Koa's bento. When Koa opened it up at pre-school, everyone crowded him to see his bento. Later the teacher asked me do a workshop on bento making. Since I am no expert, I will just do simple stuff, like rice balls with faces punched from nori.

Ice Cream Sandwich

This was my first attempt at making ice cream sandwiches. My sister was over that evening so she had a sandwich as well. She said it was so delicious. I was happy. These things don't come easy for me. The recipe and idea came from this Just Jenn blog.

Pumpkin Carving

I have never carved a pumpkin in my life before. This is our first year to have a carved pumpkin. I did some research on how to do it, and got everything together. I even found a stencil. Then I got Matt working on it right away.

Pancake Writing

Another idea I got from Gourmet Mom on the Go. Place your pancake mix in a ziploc bag and squeeze out a design on your frying pan.

Add whipped cream and carmel to make it a little more special.

To make it even more special, add sprinkles.

But if it a super special day, write their names.

And of course, don't forget the whipped cream, carmel sauce and sprinkles.

Sewn Booklets

When I teach at church, I like to give out something at the end to help them remember the lesson. So I made these little booklets and stitched them together.

I am really good at sewing on paper. Sewing on fabric is a different story.

Thanksgiving Advent Calendar

I can't remember where I got this idea from. Using your Halloween candy, you make a Thanksgiving Advent calendar. It is a great way to portion out the candy, and nice to countdown to Thanksgiving.

I used a leaf punch to mark the days. Jade wrote all the days down.

We portioned out the candy into little dixie cups. I ran a glue stick over the rim of the cup, and Jade placed the tissue paper squares with the dates already glued on.
Line them up and enjoy each day.

And there you have, happy children.

Paint Chip Matchbooks

I don't sew much. I am trying to improve on my limited sewing skills. I made this apron at one of our sewing sessions at church. Koa was so happy, especially since he loves Star Wars. The next day we decided to make some Hans Solo Burgers for dinner.

I don't know why my children don't have shirts on this day. I can only assume it was a hot day in Hawaii, and I probably didn't want to run my air conditioner.

Koa helps to grind up the onions. Jade grinds up the carrots.

Koa is not a tactile person and doesn't like to touch things. Jade doesn't mind making the patties for us.

My sister-in-law showed me how to make these little Japanese dolls years ago. They are great for hanging on your bags. They are quick and easy to make. They are also very addicting.

You will need ribbon.

And some beads. I don't actually have the bead description becuase I have thrown away the packaging long ago.

Cut your ribbon 18 inches long. String a small bell to the center.

Tie a single knot.

Using a tapestry needle (make sure it will fit through the holes of your beads), thread one side of the thread.

String your beads as shown.

Here it is with one side of the ribbon thread through.

Remove the ribbon from the needle and thread the other ribbon onto the needle. Starting from the bead just above the bell, thread the ribbon going up the doll.

The doll with both ribbons strung through. Tie a double knot to secure and your doll is completed.

Girl's Day Lollipop Tutorial

This little Japanese Doll Lollipop was featured on Zakka Life. I made these for Girl's Day for Jade to give out to her classmates.

Select your paper from 6x6 inch papers.

Cut the paper in half. Each piece will be 6x3 inches.

Fold one paper in half to form a 3x3 inch paper.

Fold that paper into thirds. No need to measure, just eye ball it.

Unfold, and fold the folded edge down about 1 inch. It doesn't have to be exact.

Cut as shown.

Cut a "V" on the top where the fold is to form a neck. Insert lollipop into the opening.

Use double stick tape to tape down the kimono and secure the lollipop.

Adhere ribbon for the obi, or use the scraps that were cut from another girl.

I joined the Toy Society, an organization that started in Australia and has spread across the world. You make a handmade toy, package it and leave it for someone to find. It is a nice way to do something nice for someone else. I would just like to bring some happiness to someone.

Here is the drop. I dropped it at Foodland, then did some shopping. It was still there when I came out. I went around town to do more errands, and drove by to see if it was still there. It was. I think it will be a while for someone to take it. That is local style for you.
